Gaza Project: Phase Two, Practical Implementation
Following the training of the Al-Shifa team at the Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospital, the second phase of our project will consist of the team of newly trained Gazan medics and conducting joint kidney transplants at Al-Shifa’a Hospital, in partnership with our team. After this close partnership and intense training, Gaza’s team of surgeons should be ready to undertake the final phase of practical implementation: conducting the transplants alone with remote oversight and assistance from the British team. The projected time frame for this part of our project is three years, however, given the volatile situation in Gaza, our team are always on the watch for new external risks and developments.
Gaza Project: Phase Three, Self Sufficiency
Phase three of our Gaza project is currently in its inception stage. At the moment, although the actual transplants are carried out in Gaza, the initial work, such as tissue typing, is carried out in the UK. This is because there are no human or technical resources for tissue typing in Gaza. Therefore, in our to ensure that the transplant system in Gaza becomes self sufficient, we propose to establish a tissue typing lab in Al-Shifa hospital. This final stage of our project will be our most challenging. We aim to approach this challenge through three key steps. Firstly, utilising our world-class clinical science team, we aim to train staff at Al-Shifa in the field of tissue typing. Following this, a period of fundraising will be necessary, in order to build the physical capacity of the lab at Al-Shifa. The third step will involve the our close supervision of the establishment and running of the tissue typing lab.
